			<description>Saint Valentine Day was initially celebrated by English catholics after the public ceremony of excommunication of Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, which happened on February 14, 1556. Queen Mary Tudor, it seems, dedicated this event to commemorate her tutor, Spanish philosopher Juan Louis Vives Valentinus. At the time when Henry VIII planed to divorce Catherine of Aragone, both, Thomas Cranmer and Juan Louis Vives, were asked by Henry VIII to provide &quot;justification&quot;
for the divorce. Vives refused to support the king's romance with Anne Boleyn and argued in favor of a faithful marriage. Thomas Cranmer, on the opposite, supported the divorce, and performed the secret marriage of the king and Anne Boleyn. Eventually, Vives was punished by Henry VIII for his
views, and Cranmer was lifted and became Archbishop of Canterbury. But when Mary I came to power and tried to restore the catholic rule in England, Cranmer was excommunicated and burned. However, open celebration of the triumph of the catholic views on the marriage was short,
because after the death of queen Mary, queen Elisabeth I gradually turned the country to Protestantism. In this turbulent time the divided people of England continued to celebrate the Holiday, but had to do it carefully, and created the two legends about ancient martyrs. The protestant legend portrayed Thomas Cranmer as the Saint Valentine who disobeyed the order of a roman emperor (King Charles of Spain) and performed secret marriages of the soldiers (Henry VIII), patronizing the romantic love. The catholic legend portrayed Juan Louis Vives Valentinus
as Saint Valentine, who opened eyes of the blind daughter (princess Mary) of his jailor (Henry VIII) by sending her a healing letter (education). Later both legends were moved in time to early centuries.
