Halloween Safety

Halloween!

Basic Trick-or-Treat safety rules:
  • During Trick-or-Treat, a parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children.
  • Children of any age should never trick-or-treat alone; they should have at least two buddies with them.
  • Stay in familiar neighborhoods. Trick-or-treaters should plan their route before leaving home and tell an adult what the route is. Adults should set a curfew. Send a cell phone along with older ghouls and goblins who go out by themselves. Make sure the battery is charged and make sure an adult is available to if trick-or-treaters need to call home.
  • Trick-or-treaters should wait until they get home and their parents can check their candy before they indulge.
  • Adults going with trick-or-treaters should clearly point out a meeting place for in case they get separated. Tell the child where you'll be: will you walk with them to each door, or wait on the sidewalk in front of each home?
  • Discard homemade treats.

Painting MonsterTen Homemade Decoration Ideas For Halloween !
Here is a beautiful selection of decoration ideas to be arranged for Halloween: window panes painting, diabolic decoration, haunted house decoration, indoor and outdoor Halloween decoration, scary decoration environment, etc

Paint the Windows With The Colors of Halloween !

Use reposition-nable painting of the “Window color” type to decorate the window panes and to create Halloween environments: pumpkins, phantoms, spiders.

Witch handDiabolic Decoration to Make With the Children !

Create simple Halloween table centerpieces by stuffing latex or rubber gloves with cotton pads. Then stick them with artificial nails, rings, fur and draw scars, blood. Reduce the intensity of the light and you will see, the effect will be seizing!

BlackligntHalloween Decoration Ideas for Busy People !

Felted lighting: If you do not have much time to grant to the decoration of your house for the evening of Halloween you can quite simply replace the white bulbs by “black light” or orange or black bulbs. Put light bulbs of low intensity on the ground or light the objects from behind to create giant shades.

SpiderIndoor Halloween Decorations ideas !

Buy insects, grass spiders, snakes, bats and rats, out of plastic. Place rats, spiders and grass snakes in unexpected places: corners, under tables etc. Suspend the bats from the ceiling and in the door frames. Filter the light so that the whole seems quite real.

GoestHaunted House Decoration !

Cover armchairs and sofas with large white cloths to give your house a “phantom” effect. Suspend netted fabric in the corners of the room which you want to decorate and cover it with cotton wadding to create an cobweb effect. Also place the netted fabric on the lamps (attention not to put fabrics too close to the electric bulbs) above the doors or to create a sinister and disconcerting atmosphere a little everywhere!

Dead branchesDead Branches for Outdoor Halloween Decorations !

Collect dead branches. Make them hang with a wire in front of the entry door of the house. Hang them by two or three, so that they are making noise and moving with the wind. Keep the smaller branches and hang them in the windows.

Orange and green bags Halloween Yard Decorations Made With Orange Waste Bags  !

Take a large orange garbage bag and fill it with dead leaves. Ask the children to draw funny or scary faces. Make ribbons with another orange bag and using a string, fix them on the top to make hair. Cut out large strips in some orange bags and fix them at the windows outside the house, the wind itself will animate and wave them. You can also install them on the entry door of the house.

Black rosesScary Halloween Decorations !

Ask your florist to put aside the dead flowers for you. If they are not dry enough, suspend them the head down during a few days, in order to make them dry. Spary them with shiny black painting and fold some stems to create a morbid environment.

Halloween decorationHorror Music !

So that your Halloween decoration is even more scary, put music which gives shivers in the back: Halloween Hootenanny , Harry Potter & The Philosopher' s, Madacy Records, Monster Mash & Other Songs of Horror, etc.

Autonm leavesCollect Dead Leaves And Peat in the Forest Make bouquets with the dead leaves !

Decorate the table or the dresser with dead leaves. Make a heap of leaves and let some boots, a hat and gloves (which you will have stuffed of cotton pads) come out of it . Everyone will believe that there is really a person under the dead leaves!

manouche: Not expensive idea : Ghosts made with Kleenex Tissue
You will need 2 kleenex tissus, a short piece of string or embroidery floss and black felt-tip pen. Cut lengths of the string or embroidery floss about 5 inches long. Take one tissue and roll it into a ball in your hand, gently but firmly. Once a ball is formed, take the other piece of tissue and place it over the ball. Gently, smooth the tissue down over the ball to form the ghosts head. Place the neck of the ghost on a length of string and tie the string around the neck and pull it tightly. This fluffs the ghost's gown. Using the felt tip marker, draw your choice of facial features! To hang the ghosts, using same string or floss, cut a length for the place you want to hang the ghost. Tie the string again, around the neck of the ghost and hang where you please.

Corina Smith: Scary glow in the dark ghosts!
Last year I was tring to make some decorations cheap for my teen daughters halloween party. We draped everything with a roll of black blastic sold for winterizing-$6.00, then I bought some cheap gauze material from the fabric department. I folded the fabric pieces in half to size that you want your ghost. I soaked it in half elmers glue, half water, and 1 bottle of .99 cent glow in the dark acrylic paint. While it was soaking in the mixture for a few min, I blew up a ballon and tied it. I rang out most of the mixture from the fabric, then placed the head inside. I then tied a string loosely around it to make the head shape. I hung it to dry where it can drip the glue on to an area that the glue would not ruin, or over plastic. I shapedthe ghost, then used assorted items like sticks, ect to hold its shape until dry. The next day I popped the ballon, and my ghost looked wonderful. I did not think it glowed enough, but was awsome under a black light. I made several 2 foot long and hung them. The wind catches them and moved them nicely! It was much cheaper than store bought, and was unique! I folded them flat for storing, and this year, I will resoak, reshape, and they will be fresh all over again! The fabric department sells this material much cheaper than the halloween section of the store. The gauze there it way over priced because they frey it and dye it grey, also easily done for very little money!

Eriin King: Fun Fun and a whole lota work.
We all know how halloween can be expensive, but on the other hand is a very fun time of year for parents and children. For those of us who live in Canada, its harder to arrange because we've still got our thanksgiving ornaments put up around the home. There are two simple ways of tying both in. First of all, Gourds and squashes are purfact to throw on a haystack in the front yard for thanksgiving till Halloween. I suggest going for a Fallish feel, with candles and leaves. Leaving spider webs, and ghosties till the end is easier. Make sure you buy your supplies early because many people have the same idea as you. Also, if your looking for a quick way to scare the victims of you neighbourhood, take a sheet ( preferably white) and a peice of dowling, along with some cotton fluff and a tie (string, preferably black). Then stuff your sheet with cotton fluff and stick a dowling rod through it, tieing it nice and tightly to perfection. Thats the easiest way to make a Ghostie or Ghoul.
Any more questions write back! Thanks guys.

kathy: skeleton
You can use plastic knifes, forks, and spoons to create a skeleton. The spoon is the head and body. Use two forks for the arms and two knifes for the legs. Use a black marker to add a face and bones. Glue the parts together. The kids love it, and it doesn't cost alot.

Halloweenfreak: Bats
You can make egg carton bats. Take an egg carton, cut out a piece of it (3 egg cups is one piece) Cut the front half of the left cup, leave the middle cup alone and cut the front half of the third cup. Paint the whole thing black. Then add eyes and fangs with white paint. (white out works just as well)

rosebud79: halloween ideas
If you have old plastic trick or treat pails, or you can go buy them cheap for a dollar at walmart, get the scariest one you can find, or one that looks like a pumpkin. White or orange is the best for the light to shine through. Put it over your outside light and you instantly have a spooky lighted halloween face. We have a sensor light and I hang it to the light with fish line, without covering the sensor, then on Halloween night I flip the switch so the light stays on.
You can also use white trash bags and old milk cartons to make ghosts. cut a hole in the bottom of the carton and thread white bag through, then draw a face on the carton. Or cover the carton with the bag leaving enough to hang below, tie a string around the neck part and draw a face on part of bag that is covering the carton, Use your imagination.
Also you can make grave stones out of cardboard, if your afraid the cardboard will get wet and yucky in the weather, cover with black garbage bag, and use white spray paint write RIP, or Here Lies Last Years Trick or Treaters.
Here's a quick tree decoration for the yard. Instead of buying those little ghosts you stuff with news paper. cut squares out of a white garbage bag, wrap a long twist tie around a wad of newspaper, poke the end of the twist tie through center of the plastic square, wrap the square around a wad of newspaper with enough plastic to hang down and tie the head off with another smaller twist tie or string. Hang a bunch of them from the tree branches or along a fence.
One more idea, If you have old unused costumes, stuff them with cloth or newspaper to bring them to life and stick a pumpikin or again an old trick or treat pail with a face on it, or even a mask, and use that for the head. Bring the costume to life and either hang from a tree, or sit on a chair next to your front door.
Use your imagination, have fun, think like a kid, and you'll have a spooktacular Halloween! :)

Rachel: Halloween on the cheap!
What about making some salt dough decorations? The kids can help, its inexpensive and you can make some really effective decorations. You will need 2 cups of plain flour, 1 cup of table salt and 1 cup of water for the salt dough mix (some people add a tablespoon of vegetable oil to aid the mixture's elasticity). Knead the dough until smooth and roll out until about half an inch thick. Use cookie cutters or the lids from jars or canisters to cut round shapes, then use something like an empty biro case to place a small hole at the top of the circle, for hanging. These can be placed on an oven tray and baked for approx half an hour on a very low temperature, say gas mark 1 - keep checking the shapes and if they start to bubble, remove them from the oven, press the bubbles down and put them back in. Once the shapes are dry, paint them like halloween characters (lots of different-looking pumpkins can look effective) and thread string or wire through the holes in the top of them and hang them around the house as a rustic-looking halloween garland. You could also roll the salt dough into different sized balls and have them as mini-pumpkins or you could be really creative and mould some salt dough monsters! You could also collect dead leaves, wash them and dry them out and string them along a piece of wire and hang as a garland. Pumpkin seeds from a carved pumpkin can be dried out and added to oil (or butter), garlic and chilli and baked on a low heat for about 20 minutes and served in a bowl as 'witches fingernails'. Black bin bags can be opened out fully and shredded, then hung over doorways, and they can also be used as spooky-looking curtains over windows. Another very effective idea (although this should be done by adults only) is to collect empty food cans, wash them, fill them with water, and freeze them. Then, after approx 24 hours, take the cans out of the freezer, and, using a long nail and a hammer, hammer holes in the can, maybe in a star or moon shape or a witches hat. Wait for the water to thaw (the ice keeps the can in shape while you're hammering it) and use the can as a candle holder - it will throw the shapes you've hammered in all around the room, and they look great if you paint them in halloweeny colours! Hope these have been of some help!

felicia: teenagers putting on a skit
my friend and i have put on a skit for the last six years at halloween. we like scaring our neighbors younger children who are about the ages of 6 or 7. if you fill up a surgical glove to the wrist with green cool aid, and tie it off at the wrist put it in your freezer, in a few days you will have a green hand for halloween. all you do after the had is frozen unwrap the glove from the ice hand, and put it in cold blue cool aid, and you have a creep floating green hand for halloween. Then if you do what we also do is pill the skin off of grapes (red grapes) you put them in the fridge unril you need them, you can have younger children touch them and say some thing scary like these are the eys or the dead witches, or just say say something scary. its really cheap.
