Jar of Homemade Vanilla Sugar A nice family activity!

Craft material
  • 500g of sugar
  • 1 pod of fresh vanilla
  • Airtight container of a litre or more
  • Knife
  • Small decorative jars
  • Sheet of paper
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon
This activity allows kids to:
  • understand instructions
  • develop their manual dexterity
Instructions:
This activity has two steps. For a smaller quantity, this recipe splits easily.
  • Pour the sugar into the airtight container. With the knife, cut the vanilla pod lengthwise. Place the pod in the container with the sugar. The earlier you do this, the tastier the sugar will be!  Don’t forget to shake the container every two or three days so that all the sugar can absorb the vanilla flavor. The waiting period goes from two weeks to a month and a half.
  • When you’re ready to transfer the sugar into the glass container, clean it with very hot water and soap. Dry thoroughly.
  • Seal the container. Place a decorative ribbon around the opening. Before tying the ribbon, write a message or the name of the product on a sheet of paper. Use your best penmanship!  Cut out a small rectangle, make a whole and pull the ribbon through. Now all you have to do is make a pretty bow.

This gift is sure to please mom! Add the vanilla sugar to fresh fruit or yoghurt, or simply enjoy it with coffee!
