The ways and customs of Mother’s Day in Asia
In China The sons and daughters in China only celebrate Mother’s Day until the age of 35. This celebration is for the younger generations and isn’t marked on the official Chinese calendar. Even though Mother’s Day originated in the United States, the Chinese readily adopted it because it goes along with their traditions in which parents receive the utmost respect. Many different activities are organised for Mother’s Day; universities organize campaigns to raise funds for mothers in need. In Peking, ceremonies are held to honor mothers who have greatly contributed to society and to their families; they receive the title of “Most Exceptional Mothers in China”. In impoverished states, projects are launched to help illiterate mothers. In Japan Japanese people have been honoring mothers since World War II. This celebration is called “haha no hi” and takes place on the second Sunday in the month of May. For this occasion, children from the ages of 6 to 14 enter drawings of theirs mothers in an art contest. It is the tradition to give red carnations to mothers on this day. In Vietnam Vietnamese people honor their mothers on “Vu Lan” day which is the 15th day of the 7th lunar month (August 8 on the solar calendar).
